I got caught up in reviewing old moments on my Instagram feed this morning. What a journey I have been on. As I viewed the feed there were moments where I could see a definite ‘turn’ of events and direction for me and for my jewelry.
I wanted to share something I wrote when I had my first every gallery showing at The Project Box in the Paseo Art District. I think you will enjoy it but more than that I hope you are encouraged!
August 2016, was the month my jewelry was exhibited for the very first time in a gallery. Right now as I am writing this it has one more week left on display and this amazing event in my life and career will be in the books.
For those of you who do not know me, and maybe for some that do, I want you to know that I am just me. I am the same normal everyday me that I have always been. The reason that I feel the need to say that is because this wonderful event has garnered a lot of attention.
The opening night was amazing. There were tons of people packing the place from opening to close. The sales were beyond what I could have hoped for. The week leading up to the opening night I was blessed to have two media outlets cover my work and the event.
This gallery event was shared with an amazing artist and dear friend who creates the most wonderful sculptural paintings – AKWesterman. While at opening night she and I were talking to a lady I had known for many years and she was so excited about our work and the event.
She made a statement that made me stop and think, and probably one of the reasons for this very blog post today. She told us that had she not known us and had walked into the event and seen our work she would have thought we were ‘way up here’, as she motioned with her hand high in the air. She was indicating that the work was of a quality and presentation that would lead her to believe that we were far above the normal human race.
I remember both Angela and I standing there listening intently and were speechless when she was done. Because we are both just normal humans who certainly don’t see ourselves, up there! I am not sure what we did say once we recovered.
During this month and having received the kind and glowing comments regarding my work, I have seen a change in how people are viewing me now. Some of it bothers me and some encourages me.
The comments that cause me to believe that the person has elevated me to a celebrity status above them, bothers me. As I said earlier in this post, I am just me and will always be just me. I never want to be viewed above anyone else.
The comments where people say that my success has encouraged them to reach their dreams and goals elate me!! Yes, you can! Because if just ordinary me can do this, and I know there is more for me to come, then anyone can do it!
One thing that has always excited me is encouraging others. No matter what your dreams or goals are, you can get there.
Is the road long – yesWill there be bumps along the way – yesWill you want to give up – yesWill you continue to learn each day – yesWill you ever stop making mistakes – noWill you ever stop messing up – no
Angela and I are creative minds who are kindred spirits. We have known each other for a very long time and understand each other in ways that others cannot. We encourage each other when things are going horribly wrong with our art because we know that right on the other side of that mistake or mess-up will be victory. When we are together we laugh about the messes we made and the times we had to redo and redo over and over again. We laugh about the ‘happy accidents’ that often came about from our huge mistakes and mess-ups in our art.
So as I was contemplating today on such things I realized that there are many people out there who want to do – something. They have a tiny little dream inside of them that they have hidden away because life demanded something else. I want my blog to not only continue to show my jewelry and how it is made, but I want to start including encouraging bits that will help people to feel more confident that they too can be whatever they want to be. And that means YOU!
Please comment and let me know what you are thinking after reading this blog. Are people hungry for encouragement? Are you one of them? If so let me know and make sure you are subscribed to my newsletter.
I LOVE to encourage people and it is my hope that you feel that when you have taken a class from me that I have encouraged you. Even if you haven’t taken a class I still want to encourage you. Maybe making jewelry is not your thing. Whatever your think is - go for it!
I am juggling making product for stores and other things this month so the class schedule is a little light.
